What is droopy eyelid? Who Has It? Is There a Treatment?
P ptosis is the downward displacement of the upper eyelid. It may be congenital or may be seen due to injuries or aging. Rarely, it may be a symptom of some nerve and muscle diseases. The cause of ptosis is that the muscle that lifts the eyelid upwards works less or does not work at all. The type of surgery varies according to the amount of working of the muscle. Nowadays, low eyelid surgery can also be performed in infants and children.
What are Other Valve Deformities?
Entropium is the inward rotation of the eyelid. It is often seen due to ageing. It can also be seen as a result of injuries, excessive contraction of the lower eyelid or congenital. Since the eyelashes turn towards the eye, it causes stinging, watering and erosion of the cornea due to irritation. Ectropium is the outward rotation of the eyelid. It is seen in old age, paralyses, allergic, shrinkage of tissues as a result of injuries and rarely congenital. Since the eyelid cannot close, dryness and wounds are seen in the eye in the advanced period. The treatment is surgery. In lid deformity called xanthelasma, yellow plaques are seen especially on the upper lids. Patients should be investigated for diabetes and klesterol.
What is Tear Duct Obstruction?
The function of tears is to wet the eye, provide the necessary lubrication and remove foreign matter from the eye. The tears flow into the nose through the tear duct. The tear duct system starts with a hole (punctum) and canaliculi on the upper and lower lids and opens into the tear sac and then into the nose with a thin canal. The most important disease of this system is tear duct obstruction. The most important symptoms are continuous tearing, burring, redness and sometimes painful swelling in the sac area (at the root of the nose). Canal obstruction may be congenital or may develop in advanced ages. In babies, the tear duct, which is closed at birth, opens spontaneously within the first month. When opening is delayed, it causes complaints such as watering and burring.
How to Treat Canal Blockage
If the massage recommended by the doctor is not sufficient for canal obstruction in infants, it is opened with a probe under general anaesthesia. The only treatment method for duct obstruction in adults is surgery. In recent years, LASER canal obstruction surgeries have been performed in the USA and various European countries as well as in our country. In this method, 980 nm. wavelength diode laser systems are used. In laser surgery, the tear sac is reached by entering the upper end of the duct called punctum without making an incision from the skin, the nasal bone and mucosa are eliminated in a short time with a high-energy laser and a new duct is created. In recent years, canal obstruction surgeries with LASER have been performed in our hospital together with the USA and various European countries. In this method, 980 nm. wavelength diode laser systems are used.
Eyelid Tumours
Note that you can completely get rid of eyelid tumours with surgical operations.
Eye in Facial Paralysis
In cases of facial paralysis, the eyelids cannot open and close normally and cannot protect the eye properly. In this case, various eyelid surgeries are performed depending on the severity of the paralysis in order to protect the eye and to achieve a more aesthetic appearance.
It may be necessary to remove a sightless eye due to infection, eye pressure, severe pain, tumour. In such cases, prosthetic eye is applied to eliminate the deformity that occurs. Movable prosthesis applications are now performed for a better aesthetic appearance. The eye colour is made in accordance with the colour of the healthy eye, so that the difference between the two eyes cannot be understood.
